Day 19 – Montevideo, Uruguay

Drink of the Day - Green Iguana

Montevideo, the capitol and largest city in the small county of Uruguay, with a population of 300,000, turned out to be very charming. As a matter of fact, half of the country’s population lives in the city of Montevideo. The city is actually located along the river, Rio de la Plata, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. We were totally enthralled by the beautiful parks, plazas, churches, neighborhoods, beaches, and shopping districts.

After leaving the ship around 9:30 we quickly negotiated a tour of the city via taxi. Our tour began on the “Old City” where we saw many old buildings, churches, and monuments dedicated to national heroes. While in The Old City we walked through the Plaza Constitucion and visited a beautiful Cathedral right across the street from the park and a McDonalds.

After traveling through The Old City we had the opportunity to see several interesting neighborhoods where the rich and famous live. One of the mansions that we saw was owned by the Reverend Moon (below). Apparently he also owns the local Radison.

While there were impoverished areas, overall the city was very metropolitan with clean streets and thriving businesses. Our driver/guide was very proud of his country and was happy to provide us with a balanced overview of the area.

After returning to the ship, completely exhausted from the day, we cleaned up and had an early dinner in the Windjammer (a casual dining area) rather than the dining room. We also went to a wonderful show, Tango Buenos Aires, performed by a music and dance troupe direct from Argentina.
