Day 10 - Sea Day 3 of 5 - Crossing the Equator

Drink of the day – Speedy Gonzalez

King Neptune reigns and has allowed us to cross the equator! It was touch and go for awhile as the sea god took exception with us for attempting to cross the equator without permission. As King Neptune held court several pollywogs and the cruise director (below) were sacrificed to the god in retribution for several minor indiscretions.

As King Neptune was deciding our fate and forcing us to turn around, a hard bank starboard sent pool water sloshing across the deck. All hands were literally on deck for the event as most of the crew had never experienced a crossing before having only sailed in the Caribbean. It was an exciting and colorful event that showed a lot of planning on the part of the ship’s crew. Kudos!

Truth be told, while we all believed we had crossed the equator shortly after 3:00 this afternoon, the actual event took place 7:00 this evening, as seen by the photo of our tv screen. As far as we could tell, there was no big line in the ocean and we have noticed yet whether the water is swirling in the opposite direction. Time will tell.

The rest of the day was fairly uneventful. After breakfast DeeDee went on deck to catch a few rays while Jane and Linda spent some time documenting the trip thus far with pictures in their travel journals.

After the equator spectacle we got all spruced up in our matching outfits to have ‘casual’ portraits taken. Unfortunately the Cruise Compass was wrong again and the portraits aren’t until tomorrow. Not to be foiled we took our own portraits on our balcony, with plenty of rum to keep the laughter flowing.

Off to dinner.

Note…time change again tonight. Tomorrow we will be 3 hours ahead of CST.

  1. How much rum did DeeDee have? It looks like Linda is holding her up.

  2. Hail King Neptune! Drink one (each) for all of us land lubbers stuck in the great white/cold north. -12 tonight. I think the phrase is "rum for my (wo)men and it looks like the 3 of you are taking that to heart. Yea! for you. One question - What does the water look like from the bottom? Continued smooth? saling.

  3. Well, as I slipped and slid home from Elmhurst after a fabulous day of teaching 8th graders, watching the snow blow and drift, and expecting the deep freeze to get deeper, I thought of warm places....and then I get the right link to finally get to the blog... wonderful job on keeping us all warm and jealous! Oh, someday, someday.....enjoy, enjoy, enjoy...there are a lot of us shivering and grumpy, so you have a lot of enjoying to do! ~ Nancy
